Who Should Attend?

Doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals interested in focused cardiac ultrasound.

Clinicians preparing for the BSE Level 1 accreditation or ICS FUSIC Heart accreditation.

ICU, ED, anaesthesia, and acute care staff looking to develop practical echocardiography skills.

Course Overview

The BSE Level 1 Foundations of Echocardiography (FoE-1) Course is a one-day hybrid programme designed for healthcare professionals seeking to develop focused echocardiography skills.

It specifically supports candidates preparing for the BSE Level 1 accreditation (BSE Level 1) or ICS FUSIC Heart pathways.

Following a flipped classroom model:

Pre-course recorded lectures provide the theoretical framework.

The full in-person day is dedicated to hands-on scanning and clinical image interpretation with expert faculty.

No prior scanning experience is required; the course is suitable for both beginners and intermediate candidates.

Key Features:

Intensive hands-on scanning on live models in small groups.

Structured pre-course video lectures and self-assessment quizzes.

Focus on BSE Level 1 minimum dataset acquisition and exam preparation.

High faculty-to-learner ratio for personalised supervision and feedback.

Real clinical case interpretation sessions.

  • Access to structured recorded lectures and quizzes.

  • Pre-course work ensures maximum hands-on scanning time during the in-person day.

In-Person Course Day:

  • Hands-On Scanning: Practice standard TTE views — parasternal, apical, subcostal windows.

  • Image Interpretation: Work in pairs on real ICU and ED clinical cases.

Post-Course Follow-Up:

  • Digital Certificate of Attendance issued.

  • Participants invited to provide feedback for future course development.

Sessions are run in small groups under faculty supervision to maximise hands-on learning and personalised feedback.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

Get standard echocardiography views and enhance image quality.

Perform basic echocardiographic measurements (e.g., LVIDd, TAPSE).

Use Colour Doppler imaging appropriately.

Recognise critical pathologies (valvular disease, ventricular dysfunction, pericardial effusions).

Interpret basic echocardiographic findings in clinical context (ICU, ED, acute care).

Understand the BSE Level 1 accreditation process and practical requirements.

Certification

Participants who complete all course modules will receive an Echo Academy Certificate of Completion.

This recognises commitment to developing basic critical care echocardiography skills.

This certificate does not constitute formal clinical accreditation.
Formal BSE Level 1, FUSIC Heart, or other pathways require supervised clinical practice and logbook completion.
